Thank you for wanting to know more about me and my candidacy for the Portage City Council.
I believe that we need a strong new voice for our community. When someone new joins a team, shares different views, challenges the thinking of others, we all benefit! After all, our city has matured. Portage today is very different than what it was 10 or 20 years ago.
What are our opportunities…
Be proactive in managing our growth
Support our growing senior population to address their changing needs
More actively engage all citizens of Portage through simple, convenient communication tools
Gain alignment on longer-term priorities, and implement with a clear timetable.
Here’s who I am…
My family and I have proudly called Portage “home” for close to 20 years.
By profession, I am a lawyer, beginning my career in Toronto in 1989. In addition to my early days as an Associate in a law firm, I worked as in-house legal counsel at The TDL Group (Tim Horton’s) and Cineplex Odeon Corporation. My area of expertise is Real Estate Law. I am fortunate to have been able to serve a variety of client interests over the years: from doing the legal work to help someone buy their very first home, to drafting and negotiating the agreements to get a new café and bake shop opened, to being involved in corporate mergers of supermarkets and movie theatre chains.
For the last four years, I have served as Co-Chair of the City of Portage Board of Review, a six-member panel that considers property assessment appeals in our community. Through this role, I’ve been able to interact with property owners with a diverse range of issues, and to bring about resolution of concerns through collaboration and communication.
I have always been involved in our community:
Currently a Board member of both the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and the Kalamazoo Singers;
Past President of the Board of Portage Community Center, and a former Board member and Governance Committee Chair of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra;
Continuing to perform with the Kalamazoo Singers and an active volunteer over the years in our schools.
I look forward to this opportunity to serve the City of Portage. I will be a City Council member who listens, studies the issues and works hard so that together we can build a more prosperous, balanced and engaged community for one and all.
